Unit Objectives

Students will analyze how consumerism in the 1920s affected the demand of new technology and consumer goods.

Students will explain how lack of safety regulations in the workplace affected the health and well-being of workers.

Students will examine the impact of technological, social, and economic changes of the 1920s through reading and analyzing the characters and situations in Radium Halos.

Radium Halos Internet Activity Choose one of the activities below and use the Internet to complete while the class is reading the novel, Radium Halos.

  1. Research factory jobs available in the 1920s. Compile a list of jobs, and create a list of the workplace dangers for each.
  2. Research five different uses of radium in the early 1900s.  What was believed about radium at the time?  Why do you think it was used in such a variety of products?  What do you think appealed to people about radium?
  3. Assemble a presentation of images from the 1920s that includes various aspects of life such as work, entertainment, consumer goods, houses, fashion, and technology.
